32 Games Similar To The Borderlands Series

Why do we love the Borderlands series? First of all, it's for the awesome gameplay. Shooting is fun, shooting is not boring. Secondly, for the variety of weapons. There are a lot of different weapon manufacturers, a lot of unique weapons, a lot of interesting properties of weapons in the games of the series. And all this is really useful, not just to be. Third, for the atmosphere. Interesting characters, appropriate humor, space adventures. And how well the comic book-like drawing fits in here. Let's talk about games similar to Borderlands in this article. Enjoy!

Despite the fact that the game is a mixture of GTA and Just Cause, it is related to Borderlands by futuristic elements, humor and madness of what is going on. Yes, yes, in the game, where the events take place in our time, there are fantastic weapons and transportation. Blaster rifles and energy shields, hoverboards and fantastic fighters. The funny thing is that their presence is even explained by the story and fits into the style of the game. Since you play as heroes who dream of getting rich, you are allowed to run a business. You buy a factory of some kind, perform missions for it and then it brings profit. Just like in GTA Vice City. This game is a reboot of the series. If you want more, you should read the previous games of Saints Row 1 - 4.

Multiplayer game, without a story campaign. In the beginning you choose a character class (attack, support, defense - three heroes of each type), then either just kill enemies of the other team or do something more difficult. A popular mode is the one where you have to push the cart as far as possible and not let the enemy team do it. Team Fortress 2 is a very easy game for beginners, and still relevant despite its age. The style is very similar to Borderlands.

This game features two-player co-op, where you can choose which hero to play as - melee or ranged. In some game situations, you will have to combine the abilities of two heroes to solve puzzles. But it is possible to pass the game alone, you can switch between them. There is no variety of weapons, but there are different types of damage. For example, the ranged hero, though he always walks with two revolvers, can use electric damage, or shoot powerful ammo like a shotgun. Character upgrading is present here, but it is very simple. Special skills are also present, but they are just powerful attacks that are triggered automatically. And each of the heroes can turn into a huge demon, sweeping away everyone in its path. Bosses are present, battles with them are very epic, even better than in Borderlands.

A continuation of the famous Halo series of first-person shooters from Microsoft's in-house studio. Besides sci-fi style, Halo is similar to Borderlands in the presence of: bosses (there are few of them, but all of them are interesting), transport (from simple jeeps with machine guns to heavy tanks and flying machines), humor (the main character's companion and aliens sometimes give out decent jokes). Co-op is available, as well as multiplayer, so if you have someone to play with - you will have a lot of fun. Multiplayer here deserves the highest marks. Unfortunately, the missions are not diverse. Most of the time you have to do the same thing - destroy key objects. Most of the missions take place in the traditional for the series closed rooms, despite the presence of open world. There is nothing wrong with the guns in the game, but it is far away from the variety as in Borderlands. On your way you will meet weapons created by both humans and aliens. Long-range and close combat. There are no special skills as such. Only abilities like cat hook and energy shield. If you liked this game, don't forget to try the previous ones. Judging by the reviews, Infinite is not the best representative of the series, but the newest. The multiplayer part of Halo Infinite is free, you can try it on Steam. If you have a PC or Xbox, you can play through Game Pass, both multiplayer and company are available in the subscription. The game is not available on Playstation.

Your task is to kick down doors and in slow motion kill all the enemies in the room. Then you need to collect money, evidence, whatever you can find. Are you done? Go to the next room and repeat the actions. The game gets boring very quickly, as there is no variety. Weapons will be new, the enemies will not be alone, but with hostages. That's all the variety. In the selection of games in the style of Borderlands this game only because of the comic style. In the world there are not so many games in this style, so it is worth getting acquainted if you are a fan of this style.

Roguelike genre. The levels are handmade, but enemies and items are randomized after each of your deaths. You will encounter many secrets, hidden locations and artifacts. The game offers a choice of character with unique abilities. You can play with a friend, there is a dynamic co-op for joint playthrough. Kill enemies, get experience and money. For experience we get more damage on enemies, and for money we buy new guns. Enemies become stronger with each level, adding more complexity. The soundtrack is great. But the graphical style may not be to everyone's liking. The first part of Risk of Rain was in 2D, so it's better to get acquainted with the project right from the second part, it has more similarities with Borderlands.

The game was made by 12 people from a small independent company called Neon Giant. And it is noticeable, you can feel the lack of budget in everything. But the game turned out to be still a good game in Borderlands style. There is a four-person co-op, but you can play alone as well. There are no interesting interactions with partners, you just shoot together. Shelters are present, but it's more of an optional element that is used for variety. The hero is upgraded through various implants. For example, you can activate a shield, or call a robot for help. You can only carry two weapons. You have access to the whole standard set of the genre, from a pistol to a rocket launcher with homing projectiles. Enemies are also standard: humans, robots, big bosses. From the unusual it is worth noting the presence of aliens. Both as enemies and as characters.

If you enjoyed Guns, Love, and Tentacles for Borderlands 3, check out Weird West. It too has the spirit of western and mysticism. And similar design style, of course. You will have to play as 5 heroes in turn, each with his own history and abilities. The decisions made in the game for one hero will affect the game for the other. From the arsenal we have 3 types of firearms and cold weapons and dynamite - analog of grenade. At the same time you can slow down time, which adds to the spectacular shootouts. The elements and environments work as they should. You can throw a barrel of oil at enemies, and then set fire to the resulting puddle. In addition to fire, you can use water, electricity, and poison. It's not just a third-person shooter with an overhead view, the game has RPG elements such as level progression and character conversations. There's a lot of interesting dialog. From the shortcomings we can single out stealth. It is clearly not finalized here. And the camera is sometimes crooked and uncomfortable. And the lack of multiplayer and co-op is frustrating. Rafael Colantonio, the founder of Arkane Studios (creators of Prey and the Dishonored series), left the company in 2017 and created a new game company WolfEye Studios. Weird West is their first game.

Players call this game "Diablo with guns", and they are right. Especially considering that it was created by former Titan Quest developers. But it looks like Borderlands too. As you have already realized, the main character of the game prefers long-range weapons, so you won't see any swords and hammers. Traditionally, from enemies and crates fall things of different degrees of rarity. There are also sets, collecting all parts of which you will get additional bonuses. There is also the creation of items. In addition to consumables, you can make unique armor or weapons. The plot is presented through notes and it is very interesting. Partially you can influence it by making choices in missions. Also in the game there is a reputation system, with its help you get access to new equipment and items, as well as missions.

At the beginning you choose which hero you will play for, there are 6 of them. One is shrouded in heavy armor and strikes hard and slow with a sword, the other dashingly wields two swords. There are also mages who can summon creatures to help in battle and weaken enemies with dark magic. There are also ranged heroes, one classic gunslinger and one engineer who summons robots. The power of each character grows with the level. On each level you will kill monsters and bosses, from which you will get supplies, weapons and other things. Only, unlike Borderlands, there are no gradations of rarity (common, rare, epic...). Gameplay is the main disadvantage of the game - it gets boring quickly. The plot is uninteresting, if to summarize - the world is attacked by demons, and only a special squad, which has been preparing for this invasion for 100 years, can fight back the monsters from Hell. It's a pity that there is no multiplayer and co-op.

The game is of the Roguelike genre. That is, the levels are randomly generated, and in case of death you have to start all over again. Not everyone likes this approach. And also there is no co-op and multiplayer. It's a dynamic and fun first-person shooter. You play as a robot, your task is to kill enemies and bosses. From unusual ideas here jumping on enemies. You can jump on them, causing them damage. Basically, you can pass the whole level without touching the ground. The graphics is made by Cel-shaded technology, which reminds of Borderlands. And pop-up damage numbers and inscriptions like in comics remind us of this series. Weapons here are corresponding: fantastic guns, like plasma rifle + from our time, like sniper rifle.

An action-RPG game similar to Diablo and Borderlands at the same time. The action takes place in a steampunk world where vampires and werewolves are combined with robots. The main and side quests are boring, everything boils down to arriving at the right place and killing everyone or someone specific. The hero is one (the game is named after him), so you won't have a choice of hero and class as you normally would. That said, there is co-op, so amazing. Weapons can be upgraded, firearms and melee weapons are available to you. The game has three parts, the best part being the first one. All three are combined into the Final Cut edition.

The game offers a variety of quests and weapons including swords, pistols, bows and grenade launchers. The world combines Asian culture, cyberpunk and mysticism. And there's a lot of assorted humor, which won't be to everyone's liking. Though the weapons are diverse, but the upgrades are monotypical. The pumping system and passive skills are also uninteresting and unbalanced. The opponents are the most common, there are big bosses. I was pleased with the presence of dismemberment, not often in games you will find such things. Shadow Warrior 2 is more similar to Borderlands than any other game in the series. The first part is a usual linear shooter, and the third part is closer to DOOM: Eternal.

The game has an interesting trick - picture in picture. When you kill an enemy in the head, or an important event happens, you see not a separate clip, but a series of frames right on your screen. It's like a comic book. It's quite stylish and unusual. And of course the various events of the environment are also stylized. The stomping of feet, the clacking of buttons. All this also appears on your screen in big letters like in the comics. Even Borderlands didn't have that. In 2020, a remake of this game came out. At the time of writing this article, it had negative reviews, which means the bugs never got fixed. It's better to play the original.

A mix of Borderlands and Dota, reminiscent of Overwatch. From Gearbox, so the trademark humor and design are in place. Apocalypse is coming, only one planet is left suitable for life. All civilizations in the galaxy have headed to it. Gameplay just simulates the struggle of peoples for a place on the planet. Multiplayer will definitely drag you for a couple of days. There are several modes, but the most interesting one is MOBA style. Your NPCs go towards the enemy NPCs, and you need to prevent the enemy forces from destroying your allies, and at the same time you need to destroy the enemy ones. There are story missions, they are simple levels with monotonous shooting of enemies and bosses. You can pass and alone, but you will quickly get bored, and it will be difficult and long to do it. It is better in cooperative mode with a friend. There are a lot of characters, they open up as you go through the game. All of them have pumping, and all of them are not similar to each other.

RPG in the style of retrofuturism and post-apocalypse. You are the sole survivor of Sanctuary 111. And you are free to go wherever you want in a large and open world. You can do any available main and side quests. Join any faction. Make choices in dialogs, which affects the game events, including the endings of the game. Weapons are plentiful and varied. From guns made from garbage to a nuclear rocket launcher that destroys everyone and everything. Guns can be picked up from enemies, bought, received for completing missions. And at the same time you can modernize your weapons. If you liked the game, I recommend you to try the third part, New Vegas, and online project Fallout 76. The game is wider and deeper than Borderlands.

A tropical island with an invented name. A dictator who terrorizes the population. And you, the protagonist, who has to free the country from tyranny. The plot is boring, the missions too. But I do not advise you to skip additional missions, they can be quite interesting. The world is open, the map is huge. You can move around it on horses, cars, tanks, helicopters. The arsenal is standard, but there are futuristic copies, prode emi-gun. It is interesting that in this part of Far Cry they removed the limitation on the number of carried weapons, you can carry all available guns with you. Guns do not fall from enemies, but are found in special crates at outposts or random places on the map. There are also stashes with unique weapons (in Borderlands they would be called legendary), which can be accessed by solving a puzzle. There are partners in the game, and all of them are animals. Panther, dog, crocodile... You can also play with a friend, the game supports co-op. The ranking system in Far Cry 6 is annoying. Everything is tied to the levels, and the most annoying thing is that for the growth of the level you do not give anything! Nothing at all! The whole pumping is reduced to the growth of numbers. It's not like in RPGs, when you can increase damage or armor strength with level growth. Regardless of whether you liked the sixth part or not, I recommend to get acquainted with the previous fifth part (better than the sixth in some places) and the third part (according to players - the best game of Far Cry series).

Ghost Recon Breakpoint Screenshot 1

A cooperative third-person shooter with an open world. Missions are monotonous and almost always boil down to clearing the sector of all living things. Like in Borderlands, weapons and supplies fall out of scattered crates and enemies (especially strong enemies), and all items vary in rarity and properties. Some rifles may have an increased range, and some pistols have an increased ammo supply. Some players joke that they spend more time in the inventory than they do in firefights. So much in Ghost Recon falls out different equipment. And it all has to be looked at, compared, and disposed of so that it doesn't take up space. There is in the game and transportation, at your service jeeps, helicopters, motorcycles. Heavy equipment like tanks are not. There is a donation. But it is not mandatory and does not interfere with the game. But to be fair, in the local store you can buy acceleration of pumping, if you do not want to waste your time on it. If you liked Breakpoint, check out the previous game in the series - Ghost Recon Wildlands. Absolutely the same, it's not even clear which one is worse or better.

There is no story in the game, you are not told anything about the game world or characters. But Gunfire Reborn has co-op and non-boring gameplay. There is a heroes pumping, but it is simple and nothing happens after its completion. At the same time, there is a general passive skill upgrade for all heroes at once, and for each one separately. The heroes themselves have two regular abilities and one super cool one. Visually, the game is very similar to the Borderlands series. Damage figures from enemies fly out, health bars over enemies decrease, big bosses are in place. Everything is just the way we like it. There are plenty of weapons, some with gimmicks, like a big carrot for melee combat. The project is unpopular, so if you want to play with people, and you have no friends, the company will be picked up for a long time. The game is roguelike, so many elements are randomized. Weapon characteristics, scrolls, talents, etc. Each attempt will be different from the previous one, which can be a plus or a minus.

Not everyone knows the world of Warhammer 40000, so it is worth explaining that Necromunda is a planet that produces weapons and equipment for all mankind. Its inhabitants are forced to live in terrible conditions, trying to survive, fighting with nature and among themselves. You play as a mercenary. You will have to fight with local gangs and find the murderer of a trade guild member. Side missions are taken on the message board and represent arenas, where you need to defeat everyone and perform simple tasks. The system of pumping weapons and abilities is poorly implemented. At the same time, the search for chests with useful items, as in Borderlands, is present. The game looks great. The style of Warhammer 40K universe is transferred perfectly. Among the skills you will have: cat hook, ability to run on walls, instant teleport to enemies, augmentation system (allowing you to improve yourself). In partners you will have a dog that can mark enemies and help eliminate them. At the same time, he has his own tree of pumping.

The world is open, but there is nothing to do in it. The standard set of activities awaits us: kill everyone, capture an outpost, find an ark. There is level progression, and there are special abilities, but they are not the most outstanding (for example, kinetic push throws the enemy away). In general, in Rage 2 you can upgrade everything: weapons, transport, yourself. Speaking of transportation. You can move across the wasteland in jeeps with guns, trucks with guns, and motorcycles without guns. Control is not the most convenient, but it is not annoying. It would seem, why to play Rage 2? And why even mention this mediocre game among Borderlands-like games? And here's why - the game is a pleasure to shoot. Because the shooting was the responsibility of a third-party studio - id Software. And these are the guys who made Doom.

It's a good RPG, but a mediocre shooter. And it can be fully played through, solving each conflict without violence. The level growth here is standard. We pump skills that help to convince opponents in dialogs, hack robots, lie professionally, kill stealthily and so on. There are 6 partners here, you can take only two of them with you. They are not interesting, but they have interesting missions. There is no cooperative playthrough. As well as multiplayer. In firefights you can use time slowdown, and on your way you will meet unusual guns, like those that reduce enemies or throw them in the air. It's a pity that there are very few types of enemies. It gets boring quickly. Equipment falls out of the enemies, as well as it is scattered throughout the levels. The game is imbued with satire on our reality. A lot of absurd humor. A third-person MMO shooter. You play as a military suit-avatar, which is called Warframe. There are many such suits in the game, they can be changed, unlocked, modified. Your abilities depend on the suit and on the way of pumping your character. The game is free, so there are paid options here, but they do not spoil the impression and are not intrusive. You can buy visual improvements to your suit or your spaceship. Also for donation you can significantly reduce the required game time, for example, you can buy a new ready "Warframe" at once, without having to open it for numerous hours. Annoying, by the way, that many game things are "created" long, real 24 hours. For example, this applies to a new weapon or character. To speed up this process you can of course for money, just like in mobile games. It is worth passing the story tasks, they are interesting and do not require monetary investment. The game universe is written not badly, and to study the world is very interesting. Especially with a friend in co-op. Too bad there is no humor as in Borderlands

A forgotten project by developers and players. A game that failed in sales with high marks from journalists. The brainchild of the creators of Painkiller. The main feature of the gameplay is a set of style points (or they can also be called creative kills), which can be spent on weapon upgrades and ammo. There is no open world, all levels are enclosed spaces with few options to pass through. Enemies are disappointing, and there are almost no bosses. There are only 7 types of weapons, and you can carry only 3. I'm glad that each gun has an alternative firing mode. From the special skills there is only a whip, with which you can attract enemies and objects closer to you. And also a kick. When activating any of these skills, the enemies fall into something like a stasis field, in which time slows down. The atmosphere of Bulletstorm is similar to sci-fi with a touch of steampunk. The game is similar to Borderlands in terms of style (comic book-like lettering and scoring), humor, and non-seriousness. Full Clip Edition is an updated version of the game, adding high-resolution textures and Duke Nukem as a character. There is a cooperative mode in Bulletstorm, but the multiplayer is simple and not worth attention.

Cooperative mode is present, the difficulty is automatically adjusted to the number of players. Equipment can be modified and improved, which is really useful in battle. For example, on weapons you can put a modification so that the enemies get damage from lightning, or from fire, or both at the same time. Borderlands fans will love it. There is also a shelter system like in Gears Of War, but it's not clear why. The enemies won't let you stay in them for a long time. Without them you will be killed quickly, and if you don't change shelters - also. Enemies are represented by humans and robots. Both of them have their own specialization. Someone throws grenades, someone is able to do a lot of damage being far away from the battlefield, someone runs at you with a cold weapon, someone treats unkilled enemies, someone controls drones, etc. Bosses and mini-bosses are also present, but they just have a lot of armor, nothing interesting they are. As you level up, you'll have access to skills like a portable turret and an automatic first aid kit. The whole plot can be described in one phrase - the special squad is fighting off Washington. In addition to the main missions, there are separate activities for 8 players, PvP mode, and "Dark Zones", where you can find the best equipment. The game has several DLCs, it's worth trying them all. The problem with The Division 2 is that it doesn't feel like progression as you level up. Weapons will be available all the same, only in a different color. The fact that it became more powerful you won't notice, as the enemies will be more powerful. There are no interesting effects like increased critical damage, that is compared to Borderlands weapons are boring, though they also fall out of the enemies a lot. The only good thing is that you can at least modify the weapon, for example, you can put a better sight or a bigger ammo magazine. If you liked the game, you should pay attention to the first part. There the events develop in snowy New York. The atmosphere is amazing.

A representative of the interactive movie genre. Most of the game time you will answer in dialogs, only occasionally controlling the character and interacting with the game world. There are several main characters in the game, but mostly you will play as a programmer of the Hyperion company. Yes, yes, the same company whose weapons we used so often in the main Borderlands series. And the director of which was Handsome Jack in the second part. The plot is simple, but interesting. In the course of the game we will smile more than once at the jokes of the characters and feel sad at the tragic scenes. The game is great! But it's a pity that the game didn't make a good profit and the company that made it closed down. In 2022 New Tales from the Borderlands was released, with different main characters.

Tiny Tina

An offshoot of the Borderlands series from the original developers themselves. They made this game working remotely, so it wasn't easy for them, but they succeeded. Not everyone is aware that there is such a game, that's why it's on this list. For Borderlands 2, there was DLC released called Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-shot Adventure. In it, the game's character Tiny Tina gathers her friends and plays a fantasy game like D&D. Actually, you played the character of this fictional board game. Apparently, the developers liked the idea of this addition, and they released a separate game Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, where you have to become a hero again in the board game Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. The whole essence of the game remains the same as in the original series. Only now the events develop in a fantasy world and style. With castles, dragons, skeletons, knights, etc. Of course, all this new environment is played by the developers and on this occasion you will hear a lot of jokes. The changes are decorative in nature. Grenades are now called spells, and energy shields are now called amulets. Instead of bullets, firearms now have arrows and crossbow bolts. Of the significant changes is the complete absence of transportation. There are no flying or ordinary cars. And the horse was not added. Some elements peculiar to RPGs are also present here. For example, the characteristics of characters like strength, dexterity, intelligence. You can pump them as the level grows, they are responsible for the usual for the series critical damage, ability recharging, maximum health and so on. And here is a more significant change - the ability to add a branch of pumping from another character. In other words, at the beginning of the game you choose a character to play with (as usual), but he has only one path of development (and we are used to several, it was always like that in Borderlands). But in Wonderlands you can simply copy the path of progression from another character and progress him too. It turns out to be a kind of multi-classing. Also from RPG the developers took the detailed customization of the hero. You can customize any part of the body, appearance, clothing, accessories. And at any moment of the game to change.
